Hype of the week: Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead

Film: Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead
Director: Tom Stoppard

Judging by the gloomy picture above and undoubtedly the title of the film, Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead seems to be anything but what it is – a comedic triumph. Based on the two very unimportant characters from William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the film revolves around its two leads, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, whose fates are already determined in the very beginning (after all, we all remember these guys as “the two nutties from Hamlet who end up dead”). Completely unaware of the magnitude of the events happening around them or of their own misfortunate destinies, the two are simply left as victims of circumstance. Again, this all seems rather cheerless, but I tell you: rarely have I witnessed a concept so genius and so utterly amusing. You see, as individuals, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are relatively uninteresting. But combined, what do they become? One of the most entertaining pairs to date, putting to shame all the other bland buddy-flicks we’re seeing in theatres today.

Now, I’m not going to lie. I only discovered this film by mistake. Having two of my absolute favorite (and so very underrated) actors, Gary Oldman and Tim Roth, in the same film caught my interest immediately, and seeing them here – young, witty and undeniably handsome didn’t make matters worse. The film was made year 1990 and is more or less impossible (!!) to find online, but just by watching this clip below, I’m thinking I’ll probably never stop looking for it anyway.
