House of Cards: everyone’s necessary evil

Frank Underwood

My new addiction is spelled by three words – House of Cards. Created by Beau Willimon, directed by David Fincher and promoted by the lead Kevin Spacey. This is a show I completely devoured in a week about a month ago, one bite at a time like Spacey’s Frank Underwood says. With Fincher’s hand and Willimon’s script it’s immaculetely executed with a sleek vision of what lies on top and below the surface of Washington’s Congress. You’ll forget there ever was a West Wing. Don’t bother watching the trailer, check into the pilot instead or binge the entire show like I did. You won’t regret it.

” There are two kinds of pain. The sort of pain that makes you strong, or useless pain. The sort of pain that’s only suffering. I have no patience for useless things. “

#MAN OF STEEL: continuum

Film: MAN OF STEEL
Director: ZACK SNYDER

Growing up I was never the fan of the Superman comic. Neither of the films or series. The problem was always – who is the man behind the suit? And unlike The Batman we weren’t completely in the dark either about Superman’s past regarding matters like where he’s from, how he formed to be a hero or why he’s taken on the role of one. So the previous depictions weren’t really to blame either, although the films before were not in any sense spectacular. And yet, you couldn’t really figure the hero out. He is a god walking among men but you’re never really interested in him, there was no intrigue, nothing grasping your attention. In Man of Steel Snyder gives the input we need but he stirs up the pot by making the man of steel a realistic one, a human-like creature with a dark past that haunts him and causes him more pain than joy throughout his life. Snyder’s usual elements are all there, the movie looks sharp, the script is more mature, the acting is darker and with good performances by the castmembers, not to mention picking the right Superman [Cavill] for the part.

These are all highlights, already making it the best movie of the comics. The OST by Zimmer gives a great backdrop too. However, the script isn’t edgy enough to make the film that memorable as a whole. They picked a talented Lois Lane [w Adams] but she still feels wrong for the part. Man of Steel is paced, and during many moments very well-done so, but gets a little out of hand during the end. There were so many buildings falling down simultaneously that I started getting dizzy at some point. Chances are the movie might be a build-up for what’s coming next, a high possibility given how successful Nolan’s retake of The Dark Knight turned out to be. So I’m not really overwhelmed (except when the buildings were falling all over the place) by the movie having my expectations pretty high, but I’m not disappointed either. Albeit the movie wasn’t the most memorable, our new hero was at least.

but in the meantime…

just finished watching Moonrise Kingdom and it is Wes Anderson’s MOST accomplished work and certainly his best film to date. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

**It’s the best Superman movie. But it’s not the best superhero movie. We’ve gotten spoiled by Nolan and his Dark Knight trilogy. Suddenly all the other movies out there have higher standards to live up to and it’s not as if we’re directly comparing any film to the works of BB, TDK, TDKR but the opposite. We’re just instinctively becoming underwhelmed.**

More highlights and downsides of the film soon
